New to this?Your own style

Walking into a boxing gym can feel daunting.Make your style work for you.

If you’re worried about looking out of place, you don’t need boxing experience to start. Sessions are coached one-on-one or with someone you bring, at your level.Your height, reach, build and instincts shape how you move, manage distance and choose your shots.

You can box for fitness without sparring. Sparring is a separate, optional goal.

What to expect

Your first session.

  1. Arrive & meet TommyStart with your goals

When you arrive, Tommy will meet you and show you where your session will take place. You’ll talk through your training and what you want to improve.

  2. Talk about your starting pointShow your boxing

You’ll talk about your experience, goals and anything that may affect how you train. You’ll shadowbox and work the pads while Tommy watches.

  3. Learn to box properlyGo over what he saw

You’ll learn stance, guard, footwork and clean punches from your first session as part of getting fit.Tommy will explain what he noticed and show you the changes he’d suggest.

  4. Find your pacePick the first priorities

You’ll agree on a pace together, with breaks whenever you need them. You’ll agree on two or three things to work on first.

  5. Finish & look aheadLeave with a plan

You’ll finish with a check-in about how it felt and what you’d like to work on next. You’ll leave with a plan for those priorities and what to revisit next time.

What training can include

Warm-upFootwork & distance

You’ll start with gentle movement and simple boxing drills to prepare for the work ahead. You’ll work on using your reach and moving into position for the punches you want to throw.

Shadow boxingCombinations & shot selection

You’ll practise punches and footwork without a bag or pads, giving you time to work on your stance, guard and movement. You’ll practise choosing punches that suit the opening, then linking them into combinations that flow with your movement.

Pad workSlips, rolls & recovery

Tommy will hold the pads and guide you through punches and combinations, helping you practise timing and accuracy. You’ll practise slips and rolls, with attention to your balance and the position you’re in to respond.

Bag work & conditioningTechnical rounds

You’ll practise your punches on the bag and move through a short series of exercises to work on your fitness. You’ll bring the skills you’re working on into technical rounds, practising when to use them as well as how.

Who it’s for

Training around real life. For your next step in boxing.

A demanding job, young kids or running your own business can fill the week. Training needs to fit around real life, not the other way around. You might have hit a plateau, want to understand why things work, or be moving from fitness boxing into more technical work.

You might want to feel good, move well, or have one part of the week that’s yours. Your goals shape the mix of boxing, strength and conditioning.Maybe you’re a front-footed boxer who wants to learn to counter and defend when someone makes you miss or fires back. Or perhaps there’s something else you’d like to work on.

You can train purely for fitness, or start there and choose to work towards fighting if your goals change.

The approach

Fitness and skill, shaped around you.Build around what works.

Whether you want to build strength, improve at your sport or just feel better, your goal guides the mix of boxing and conditioning. The plan can adjust around sore shoulders and busy weeks. Once you feel comfortable, you can choose to spend more of your sessions developing your boxing skills.Every boxer has things to work on. Your build and instincts are a starting point, not a rule. Tommy builds on your strengths and works on what holds you back. He explains why things work so you can adapt them. If boxing with your hands down suits your reflexes, timing and distance, he’ll teach you how to manage the openings it leaves. The aim is to make mistakes cost less and give opponents less to work with.

Your coach

Hi, I’m Tommy.

For me, learning to box should be something you enjoy. Have a laugh, ask questions. Everyone's got to start somewhere, and you don't need to be good straight away.I've been boxing since 2009. I've competed in amateur and corporate boxing, and in kickboxing. I don't compete anymore, but I still train and spar. I'm always working on my own boxing and trying new things, so I can bring them into my coaching. I've had a few good coaches over the years and picked up something different from each of them.

I'd played footy, soccer and rugby growing up, but boxing at 19 was the first thing that used all my energy, and I knew straight away it was the place for me. I remember holding pads for mates in a backyard. One of them reckoned I was pretty good at it.I was holding pads for training partners before I ever called it coaching. Watching my first coach work with a kid who was just starting out showed me what a coach can be to someone. In 2022 I started TN Boxing & Fitness.

In 2022 I started TN Boxing & Fitness. I care about helping you improve, but you don't need to worry about letting me down. I want you to enjoy learning and take something away from every session. For me, everyone has different abilities, so you can't teach everyone the same way. I want you to understand what we're working on and why. I'd rather sharpen what you've got than change your style, and I want you leaving each session with something you can use.
